Het zuiden van Mexico is getroffen door een krachtige aardbeving met magnitude 7,1. Die deed de gebouwen hevig schudden in Mexico City. Mensen renden daar in paniek de straat op. In de miljoenenstad zouden 27 gebouwen zijn ingestort. [quads id=1] Op foto’s die intussen binnensijpelen, zijn verschillende gewonden te zien. Heel wat slachtoffers zouden ook nog onder het puin liggen. Hier en daar is brand uitgebroken. Volgens een eerste balans zijn er al meer dan honderd doden gevallen. Zeker 3,8 miljoen huishoudens zitten zonder stroom.
Ondertussen is de dodental na de aardbeving, waarvan het epicentrum ongeveer 120 kilometer ten zuiden van de hoofdstad lag, opgelopen tot zeker 119. Aangezien in Mexico-Stad veel gebouwen, waaronder wolkenkrabbers, zijn ingestort, ligt de eigenlijke balans waarschijnlijk aanzienlijk hoger.
De meeste doden zijn gevallen in de staat Morelos, net ten zuiden van Mexico-Stad. Volgens de autoriteiten zijn daar 54 dodelijke slachtoffers. De staat Puebla, het epicentrum van de aardbeving, heeft ten minste 26 doden te betreuren, zei de gouverneur. Minstens vier mensen werden gedood in de hoofdstad Mexico-Stad.
De kracht van de aardbeving bedroeg 7,1 op de schaal van Richter, aldus het nationaal seismologisch instituut.
De aardbeving veroorzaakte een ware ravage in Mexico-Stad. President Enrique Peña Nieto maakte bekend dat daar zeker 27 gebouwen zijn ingestort. Ook gaf hij opdracht beschadigde ziekenhuizen te ontruimen. Patiënten worden overgebracht naar andere medische instellingen. [quads id=1]
Alle vluchten afgelast De internationale luchthaven heeft voorlopig alle vluchten afgelast. De universiteit van Mexico City deelde via Twitter mee dat alle cursussen en evenementen voor onbepaalde duur opgeschort zijn om de gebouwen op schade te onderzoeken. In de scholen gaan de lessen voorlopig niet meer door.
Het land werd eerder deze maand ook al getroffen door een krachtige aardbeving van 8,2 op de schaal van Richter. Toen kwamen bijna honderd mensen om het leven. Het epicentrum lag in de Stille Oceaan, waardoor de schok in Mexico City nauwelijks voelbaar was. Daarna volgden nog duizenden kleinere naschokken.
